We were concerned at the amount of traffic, or should say the lack of it. (It is said that the railroads were a good barometer for economic conditions) so we would see how things went during the day.
We head down to the depot and wait around for some time but nothing is around, so we decide to head up to the crossing at Mott.
We pack up our gear in the back of the car, and head up the short steep incline from the depot to the main street. We had gone about 200 metres when Jeff says "the boot has not been closed" I jump out and go to the rear to check "Oh shit and *&* hell my camera bag that was sitting on one of the suit cases has gone, my video, digital camera, passport, cash are all in it, and I feel a chill up my spine "Who the %&%& didn't check the boot was closed" looks like the trip is over for me before its started.( Um yes I was the last to Um ''''''''''''' the boot.)
I hear a shout behind me and see a young woman coming towards me, and yes she has my camera bag in one hand and my video camera in the other. I have never been so pleased to see a stranger bearing gifts, especially when they are yours. She was following us up the street and saw them fall out the back of the vehicle, and nearly run over them as the camera bag rolled towards her and the video camera fell out.
I thanked her profusely and offered her some cash, which she refused, saying she was only to happy to help. I thanked her again for her honesty, and then thanked Jeff for being on the ball, and tried not to think about what could of happend if !
We head up to Mott and sit and wait, eventually we hear a train heading up towards us, and we have a stack train pass, a short time later, we follow another stack train back down to Dunsmuir.
We note the weather seems to be closing in, as in all of our past trips we never stay where the weather is crap, it is decided to leave Dunsmuir and head for Klamath Falls in Oregon a couple of hours drive and spend the night.
We arrive in Klamath Falls about 1400, but the weather seems to be getting worse, still we head for the depot, no sign of life, so we might as well find somewhere to stay, but we spot a headlight way down the yard and wait-and wait eventually a UP freight arrives.
The crew steps off, and new crew comes over from the depot, are the guys moving house! The bags that were being thrown up onto the SD70MAC would fill a van. Again its the waiting game, finally the headlights are switched to bright and we film him leaving the yard. Light rain is starting to fall, and again we decide to move on up to Bend.
By this time we are starting to feel a little stuffed, and Jeff and I change driving about every hour, we never caught the freight. We arrive in Bend and find a good motel right next to the yard at Bend, we note a couple of units running in the yard and wander over to check them out, both units are in BN Green, one of the units is a GP28.
Hunger pangs grip us all, so its time for grub - we will check out the yard tomorrow.
