Blog - Day 2

  • Day 2

As today we had to pick up a member of our party who arrived a week earlier, and was arriving at Emeryville on Amtrak's "California Zephyr" from Denver, we would spend most of the day at Jack London Square in Oakland, getting street running.

Amtrak California - Jack London SquareIt was decieded that we would take route 92 over the San Mateo bridge, across San Francisco Bay to Oakland, and the San
Mateo bridge was the only one of San Francisco's many large bridges we had not travelled over during our previous trips.
We enter the information into Never Lost, taking the shortest time option.
We are off and into San Francisco's rush period on the motorway system, never lost directing us onto route 101, "Shit! where did all that traffic come from! I thought LA was bad, " Geoff says "I think we are going in the wrong direction"which I say  "Trust me I  we know where we are" well we did get there, even though it was via the Oakland Bridge.Never Lost did take us
      via the shortest route..

Amtrak California - Jack London SquareWe find that parking is plentyful, and park in an underground park. We make it back up in time to catch an inbound train.
We walk up the street to look for a different location and end up talking to who I thought was a down and outer, how wrong can you be, never judge by dress.
This guy was a book of knowledge, sitting on the same seat every day he would watch the trains pass through the square, and passed on a number of tips."See that walkway over the tracks up there, go up there into the building, take the lift to 2nd floor, and you will get a good view up and down the square from that walkway, it contiues into the parking building" he says.
"Walk up to the top of that park and you will get great views". I ask him about local freights, he said a local passed through but the last one he saw was on Tuesday. We thank him and head up to the parking building. He was right we spent 2 hours up there on a beautiful day, I did not take any still shots electing to shoot video.

We head back down the street, buy some lunch and head down to the waterfront to enjoy the view. Now the inner person is topped up we head down to the Amtrak station to check out the arrival times of the "California Zephyr" at Emeryville station catching a couple more services before we get there.
The station open and we ask the agent what time is the CZ due at Emeryville, to which we are told 40minutes ahead of time, that gives us just 50min to get there. We find our way without any problems as it is only a couple of miles down the road, but by the time we find the parking area, the train has come and gone.
Peter is waiting in the station. Back to the Hotel, and sort out what we are going to do tomorrow. Feed, and retire.
