Subsequent pages under this title page outline details for my proposed railfan tours to the USA and Canada.
The intent is to conduct at least one of these tours every year, however demand may see all three being conducted each year.
The tours commence at Auckland, New Zealand and are aimed at the New Zealand railfan, however participants from other countries are welcome to attend and can meet us at a pre-determined location in the USA or Canada. Costs will be adjusted accordingly.
Each tour will be escorted by myself. I'm an open minded, relaxed 46yo railfan with a military background, and I've had plenty of driving experience in both the USA and Canada. I'm fluent in Canadianese and Americanese too.
There are three main tours being planned:
This tour is going ahead in March / April 2013 and is being organised by Dave Simpson of Hamilton. This tour covers California, Nevada and Arizona, with the focus being the Mojave Desert, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco and surrounding areas.
This tour is in the initial planning stages but is progressing well. It covers Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and Kentucky. Registrations of interest are now being accepted. No dates have been set for this trip, but I'm aiming for a summer time frame.
This tour covers British Columbia and Alberta, Montana and Washington. Registrations of interest are now being accepted. No dates have been set for the first trip, however late spring when there's still a bit of snow on the peaks would be ideal.
Got a good idea for a railfan tour ? Drop me an email and I'll take a look.
History:
Early in 2011, I stumbled across a gentleman by the name of Dave Simpson. Dave is a retired NZR Locomotive Engineer, but is still called upon for his skills at driving and firing steam locomotives.
Dave has for the last 10 years been organising railfan tours for himself and a close circle of friends. He now wishes to change his focus to other ventures, and after a short discussion, we mutually agreed that I would take over the Railfan Tour organising, but open it up to anyone who wishes to attend, by using the advertising power of the internet and railfan magazines.
Tour Theme:
All tours have a common theme - self drive, the minimum number of people and the focus being solely on railfanning - no museums, no amusement parks, no shopping sprees. To repeat - these are railfan tours, designed by railfans for railfans. It's not a honeymoon.
Costs:
The cost includes all airfares ex Auckland, rental vehicle, fuel and accomodation. No meals will be organised or included in the cost - we'll wing it on the day.
