Over June and July of 2011, Dave Simpson and three friends went on an extended 42 day self drive tour around the USA and Canada for the sole purpose of photographing and filming trains. This netted enough footage to make another seven volumes of the Railfan Diaries series.
I had one instruction for Dave - film it in Widescreen - and so he did.
This series contains a mixture of all new locations and some repeat visits, and is presented in geographical sequence.
Use a good atlas or an on-line mapping tool to trace their journey while watching the DVD and get a real feel of the adventure they had.
Enjoy !
Series 2 of the Railfan Diaries commences with Volume 15 – San Mateo to Skykomish.
Volume 17 takes in all the action from Marias Pass from Whitefish to Shelby Montana and includes shots from Coram, Essex, Java East, Summit and Bison.
Volume 18 sees our travellers spend a good deal of time at Crawford Hill Nebraska, setting up in various locations including Belmont and Sawtooth Log Road.
Once they’ve had their fill of this well known landmark, they head south through Hemingford, Antioch and Lakeside Nebraska, ending up at the worlds largets railway yard – Union Pacific’s Bailey Yard in North Platte Nebraska.
Volume 19 kicks off at Rock River Wyoming, with the team heading west through Rawlins and Green River to Salt Lake City Utah.
Here they swing south and take in all the action from Soldier Summit, Kyune, Price Canyon, Castle Gate, Helper and Price.
The action is full on, the scenery is unmistakebly Utah.
By now our adventurers are heading home and Volume 20 covers the journey from Holbrook and Winslow Arizona to Amboy and Ludlow California.
The last tick in the box for any railfan visiting California should be Tehachapi Loop at Walong.
Volume 21 sees our weary travellers taking a break from 40 days of travelling and spend some time relaxing watching the parade of trains traversing the spiral loop.
Shared by both the BNSF and Union Pacific, there’s always something happening here.
The United States and Canada know how to get the most out of their railroads – utilising the latest developments in emission controlled diesel electric locomotion, the parade of freight trains across the American continent is one that challenges the senses with their enormous length, speed and obvious demonstration of power.
A very special acknowledgement must go to Rodney J Sorensen and Greg Sherwood who graciously gave their permission for the use of their photographs on the covers of these productions.
Thank you very much. Your skills as rail photographers is surpassed only by your generosity.
